Your eating feels beyond your voluntary control, you exercise to injury, push yourself to diet despite resenting it, or your preoccupation with your body image keeps you from fully enjoying life. Basic things like going to a family gathering, going out on a date and leaving the house spur of the moment are not that simple for someone with an eating disorder. You have to get over huge mental hurdles just to do simple things

The noise inside your head doesn’t stop telling you that you’re not good enough. The voices outside of you tell you to eat more or eat less or some people ask what you eat to look the way you do. It can all be so confusing! No one really seems to see YOU. It’s as if no one really cares. Often, others don’t understand that eating disorders don’t just take over your eating habits; they dominate your entire life; every thought, every action!

Overall, eating disorders are not about size and shape, or even eating! Health comes in all shapes and sizes. Eating disorders are about your thoughts… your feelings… your shame, embarrassment, and secrecy, to mention a few. Above all, self-acceptance is key. Recovery process is like life, its not perfect. Full recovery is possible, although the process can be lengthy. Recovery often involves a shift toward a belief of something greater than oneself and a sense of return to being vital and having a place in the world

While recovery is a choice, developing an eating disorder definitely is not.
