PTSD is a disorder that develops following stressful, distressing or frightening life events. The event may be a single occurrence; like an auto accident or home break-in or, the trauma may be the existence, over time, of a situation that a person feels they can’t escape accompanied by a sense of helplessness. The symptoms of PTSD may start soon after the event or it may be months before they show up. PTSD can happen to anyone, even children.
PTSD creates a sense of fear and negative self thoughts. You may find yourself irritable, hyper-alert, and having difficulty relating easily to others in your life. Nightmares may disrupt your sleep and flashbacks to the incident may intrude in your waking hours when reminded of the trauma. You may find yourself having angry outbursts or feeling guilty, worried and depressed.
You might experience a feeling of shame or blame yourself for what happened to you. It is important to remember that the trauma wasn’t your fault, your symptoms are normal responses to a difficult experience and there is a way back to personal trust and confidence. Through a trusting therapeutic relationship, and the use of EMDR, trauma can be processed and you can reclaim your life. EMDR is a one-on-one form of psychotherapy that is designed to treat the symptoms of various forms of trauma and to improve overall emotional well-being. EMDR is a powerful and highly effective trauma resolution therapy .
You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.
